I recently participated in this research project opening borders opening objects. A MA research project that aims to explore the complex relationships between production, consumption and subjectivity.
I was asked to submit an image of a souvenir of mine, either bought or found. I chose my Namji Doll. I bought it from the Milnerton Market
It is interesting where the contemporary artist positions themselves within this complex exchange. Its almost impossible to avoid being a consumer, I guess what is important is what kind of consumer one chooses to be...

OTHER PEOPLE THAT LOOK LIKE ME
Doing visual research I'll go through millions of images a day, and often would stumble on an image that reminded me of myself. So for the past couple of years I have been collecting them.
Through all of them, although very different, you'll be able to arrive at an objective truth of what I look like. Here they are so far, in the order that I found them.

PORN CUT OUTS
I lived with a guy who loved making abject collages with porn, much like this but without the post-feminist/ post colonialist conceptually driven subtext. So I became interested in the discarded backgrounds, once the subject was removed. What was left behind were banal and often tacky, but mostly benign interior domestic spaces. Almost like the scene of a crime. This series is still in process.
